DAY 2: MACHU PICCHU – CUSCO
The last and most important day, we start early with breakfast at the hotel and take the first buses to Machu Picchu. Once we enter, you will start a guided tour of the most important places (Intipunku or the Inca Bridge, temples, palaces, squares). The tour lasts around 3 hours; afterwards, you will have time to explore the citadel.
Once you are done exploring, you will take the bus to Aguas Calientes, have lunch and take the Vistadome train back to Cusco. Arrival is around 7.30pm back to your hotel.
PLACES WE VISIT:
CHINCHERO (Land of great weavers). It is located just a 45-minute drive from Cusco, famous for its local market, colonial church, and agricultural terraces. The inhabitants are mainly descendants of indigenous Quechuas dedicated mainly to agriculture and weaving. Chinchero produces the best textiles in the region, fabrics with Andean designs, natural colors and old traditional tools.
MORAY (Greenhouses), located at 3,500 m (11,500 ft), this impressive archaeological site is made up of four enormous circular terraces in the shape of a Roman amphitheater, each of which has its own irrigation system. Although the purpose of these terraces is unknown, it is believed that the terraces were used as “greenhouses” for agricultural experimentation, an adaptation of different crops due to the great difference between each terrace, which allows different microclimates and plants to be obtained.
SALINAS (Saltworks). The Salineras have been in this place since pre-Inca times on an incredibly steep mountainside; The people of Maras collect salt in more than 3,000,000 ponds using the same technology used by their ancestors. The process takes about a month to place the salt water every day in the pools and then evaporate it until it reaches about 10 cm in height to be collected and sent to local markets.
OLLANTAYTAMBO (Last Living Inca Citadel). Located 94 km from Cusco, Ollantaytambo is the gateway to Machu Picchu, surrounded by huge mountains, narrow cobbled streets and a beautiful Inca site, it is the only city that has been continuously inhabited from the Inca period (14th century); that is why the town is called the last living Inca citadel. In the Spanish conquest, it was used as a fortress during the battle of Ollantaytambo.
